Seriously boosts the speed of the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex drive Oct 28, 2010

I've got a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1 TB drive, and this is a very nice accessory to have with it. Obviously, it will only work for you if you have a Firewire 800 port on your computer, which is not the same as the older Firewire 400 (but it's also worth noting that the speed on Firewire 400s is about the same as for a USB 2.0 plug, so that kind of adapter would be effectively useless).
With this attached the drive will read and write nearly twice as fast as it does with USB 2.0. I did a system test on a 1GB file transfer and found that with the USB 2.0 cable it writes 28.7 MB/s and reads 36.4 MB/s. With the Firewire 800 cable it writes 55.5 MB/s and reads 73.5 MB/s. Theoretically, the drive runs faster than that and the cables could transfer data much quickly than that - so these shouldn't be taken as absolute speeds but only how fast it is working on my system. Still, what that means is that with this cable it can transfer a 2 GB video file in just over half a minute.
Like a couple of other reviewers I did notice that the adapter tends to heat up a bit at the point of connection - it doesn't seem hot enough that it's dangerous, more warm than truly hot. Still that suggests that this may be drawing more power than it's actually using. I don't know enough about it to know if that's a design flaw or just an unavoidable feature, but it's worth mentioning.

Lightweight and Fast but has design flaws Jul 08, 2010

This Firewire 800 cable adapter is small and light featuring fast Firewire800 transfer rate. HOWEVER - this thing gets HOT!! After leaving it plugged in for 10 minutes, the connector became noticeably warm to touch. I disconnect it and felt the metal connector - it's quite uncomfortably warm to touch which made me concerned because the USB 2.0 adapter that comes with my GoFlex 500 GB does not get this hot (not even close). Furthermore, the short FireWire 800 connector cable is integrated to the dock / not detachable - it's not suitable for desktop use due to the short cable length. Overall I am afraid the long term durability of the cable due to the extreme amount of heat put out by this cable.

This firewire adapter will ruin your Firewire port Jun 13, 2011
By as I purchased this product in need of storing 700 gigs of music videos. I used it for over a month with my MacBook Pro and the drive worked fine while using the supplied firewire adapter. Their supplied cable MUST be used due to the adapter they have on the back. This drive requires adapters, not cables. None the less, the firewire cables end has an extremely tight fit. After using the drive for a month I went to use one of my other firewire 800 drives and a standard firewire cable now has play. Moreover, this play causes my other drives to constantly become disconnected without safe removal due to the movement in the port which was caused by the seagate cables tight fit. Segate is continually blowing me off and I am currently waiting to be contacted by the next manager who will probably tell me that I am plugging it wrong again. Yes thats right, they told me I cant plug in a cable properly. AVOID this hard drive unless you dont want your firewire port on your MacBook Pro to function as designed. They finally called me back and said that I should of have just left the cable plugged in to my macbook pro and that it is my fault for using it. #JOKE

Be wary! Overheats and dies... Jun 22, 2011
By AndyOfLinux Bought this cable/adapter to convert my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB drive to Firewire 800. Worked for a day but then the drive kept randomly dropping offline. I was using it on my Mac Mini as a TimeMachine backup drive. The backups would fail randomly. I picked up the drive (w/ adapter) and burned my hand! Seems like the adapter is overheating and failing. Went back to the USB 2 interface and have had no problems since.
Not recommended :(

Note this is FireWire 800 not 400 Sep 20, 2010

FireWire 800 is "backward-compatible" with FireWire 400 but the cables are *not*. If you just have some old (or even not that old) 1394 port on your PC it's not going to automatically work. From Wiki:
"...It is backwards compatible to the slower rates and 6-circuit alpha connectors of FireWire 400. However, while the IEEE 1394a (FireWire400) and IEEE 1394b (FireWire800) standards are compatible, FireWire 800's connector, referred to as a beta connector, is different from FireWire 400's alpha connectors, making legacy cables incompatible."
You have been warned.
