HUGE improvement over Norton Internet Security 2008 Nov 29, 2008
By New England Yankee I wrote in my review of Norton Internet Security 2008 that I used the product - but despised it. The hit to my system's resources was just too great, and I turned much of it off as a result.
The 2009 version is MUCH faster - to the point where I am leaving all options enabled. The hit to the system appears to be minimal. The user interface is simpler and less confusing also. Big improvements all around.
Be aware that the engines underlying Internet Security 2009 and Norton 360 are reported to be different, with 360 using the older version (i.e., performance problems).

Buyer BEWARE!! All the users are tied together. Jan 30, 2009
By Anneliese Norton Internet Security 2009 5-User
I have used Norton Antivirus for the past number of years and have been fairly satified with the level of protection, even if the customer support left a little to be desired. I decided to step up a bit and purchase Norton Internet Security 2009 because two of my computer's subscriptions were running out, which in the newer versions leaves you UNPROTECTED!
Since I have 5 computers in the house and they were all coming due at different times, I decided to get the 5-user edition. After installing it on 2 computers and going to my Norton account, I seems that the subscription lasts only one year from the activation date of the FIRST computer subscription. I was very unhappy because two of the other computers still have at least 8-11 months of subscription left on them.
So if you buy a multi-user license, be aware that it looks like it will expire for all the computers at the same time. I would have never purchased this if I would have known that information.

works like it should Nov 29, 2008
By W. Howe this year's version installed easier than 2008 and seems to run more efficient on my computers. I installed it on a vista system with a duo core CPU - went great. Then moved on to an XP system with a Pentium 4 - also installed great. Then moved to another XP system with a duo core CPU - no problems. I was happier with how well it installed and is running for 2009 than the 2008.

Major Improvement! Apr 03, 2009
By M. Bell
"Thinker"
I purchased this product to replace a myriad of free security suites and antivirus software on my home network. Ironically, I had always been a Symantec Norton Suite user, but abandoned Norton 360 after I migrated to Windows Vista and performance when straight downhill. After constant patches and continued poor performance, I reviewed alternatives and found that Avast! and AVG were well rated for personal use.
First I tried BitDefender, McAfee, Panda, and a few others. Using Avast! and AVG proved effective (and cheap), but slow and less than ~95% protection against the increasing number of threats each year, so I began researching alternatives again and was very surprised to see that Symantec had moved from the bottom 25% to the top performer, both in industry and consumer reviews. I wanted a product with performance guarantees and full support, so I decided to try Symantec again. I purchased and installed this product, and so far I am completely satisfied (actually impressed).
Pros:
1) Intuitive - from install to operation, the product is seamless and an obvious attention to customer requests/complaints from previous Symantec products.
2) Quick install & update - the product installed completely in less than 1 minute, with no reboot! Biggest surprise - everything worked, and I checked everything, apps, games, web sites, benchmarks, web performance, web security checks, etc. (took quite a while).
3) Virus identification - truly impressive. Not just in indentification, but in the user interface presented when problems are identified. No more wading through counter-intuitive processes or menu options; instead the program took the obvious actions, and very quickly. I had the right amount of interaction (ranging from simple notification, to options requiring my attention), and all configurable in a simple user interface. A very nice change from everything else I've used.
4) Browser toolbar - there is a toolbar, both for IE and Firefox. I typically hate addon toolbars, but the Norton toolbar is conservative and very useful. Suprisingly, I find that I actually use it, rather than it just taking up space in my browser window.
5) Internet password keeper - another function I typically opt out of, I find the 'Cards & Log-ins' tool to be highly functional, secure, and with a small footprint (menu and interface). I used a couple of cracking tools on the password database, and it held up well.
6) One-stop security solution - Firewall, PII protection (Identity Theft), anti-spam, malware protection, etc., all in a small and elegant package with minimal resource demand.
7) Fast! - everything from install to monitoring to protective actions to updates - all very fast. The systems on my network showed a marked performance improvement. Now that's a nice change!!
Cons: Nothing has come up - which is very surprising.
Summary: In my opinion, this product is everything you need, and nothing you don't. It is an obvious improvement over previous Symantec attempts in this area, with a sleek interface, and fast and efficient performance. This is clearly the best complete internet security package I have used or tested, and I am very satisfied with the product thus far.
NIS 2009 Apr 27, 2009
By William E. Hooper NIS 2009 is a vast improvement over earlier releases both in installation and in usage. I have installed more than 25 copies for my family and friends and received nothing but positive feedback.
