5Great Flavor, Healthier Alternative  Feb 02, 2010 By danakscully64
The first time I tried the Toaster Pastries from this company, I couldn't take more than a bite, they were terrible. I believe I bought the Strawberry unfrosted kind, whatever they carry at Trader Joe's. I vowed to never do that again. Last night I was at my local Health Food Store and saw their large selection of these products (different fruits, frosted, and unfrosted). I decided to be brave and bought the Frosted Cherry Pomegranate. I took one bite and immediately fell in love. They taste a lot like the Pop-Tarts brand, but without the terrible ingredients and gelatin (I'm a vegetarian). They have the same amount of calories per pastry and the nutritional information lines up pretty close (except the NP brand aren't fortified with any vitamins). What doesn't compare is the ingredients list... I can read everything on the Nature's Path box, some of the words on the Pop Tarts box can be sounded out, but they're not words I've ever used before. Here's the ingredients list for Cherry Poptarts:

ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMIN MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], RIBOFLAVIN [VITAMIN B2], FOLIC ACID), CORN SYRUP, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, DEXTROSE, SOYBEAN AND PALM OIL (WITH TBHQ FOR FRESHNESS), SUGAR, CRACKER MEAL, CONTAINS TWO PERCENT OR LESS OF WHEAT STARCH, SALT, DRIED CHERRIES, DRIED APPLES, CORNSTARCH, LEAVENING (BAKING SODA, SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE), CITRIC ACID, GELATIN, MODIFIED WHEAT STARCH, CARAMEL COLOR, XANTHAN GUM, SOY LECITHIN, CALCIUM STEARATE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, RED #40, NIACINAMIDE, REDUCED IRON, NATURAL FLAVOR, RED #40 LAKE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), YELLOW #6, CARNAUBA WAX, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1), CONFECTIONER'S GLAZE, FOLIC ACID, BLUE #1.

Cherry Pomegranate (removed all but 1 of the organic labels, makes the msg long):

Organic wheat flour, evaporated cane juice invert, evaporated cane juice, palm oil, cherries, apples, whole wheat flour, corn starch, vital wheat gluten, sea salt, pomegranate concentrate, dextrose, leavening (baking soda, cream of tartar), rice starch, cherry flavor, citric acid, honey, molasses, rice bran extract, vanilla flavor, algin, sodium citrate, monocalcium phosphate, whey protein concentrate (milk), colored with betalins paprika extract (from plants).

They don't even belong in the same category, Nature's Path brand is the way to go.

5A snack my husband loves  Aug 18, 2010 By Shala Kerrigan
I don't like toaster pastries, but my husband and children love them. We've been really watching for hidden sources corn syrup in things for the last year or so, and the big name brand toaster pastries do use corn syrup. We found these, and they don't contain corn syrup or gelatin. They are shelf stable for longer than it takes my family to eat them. Not nutritious, but you don't expect toaster pastries to be nutritious. It is a snack that I don't feel guilty about having on hand.
This is my husband's favorite flavor. The pastry part is much like the big name pastries in consistency and texture. The frosting is sweet, and the filling is sweet and tart.
If you look at the ingredients and don't know what inverted sugars are, they are sugars that are made sweeter, usually by heating and adding a bit of an acid like lemon juice, which makes it an organic and natural alternative to high fructose corn syrup.

5Delicious - better alternative  Jan 25, 2010 By OurStoryHour
Sick of partially hydrogenated oils in your Pop-Tarts? These are tasty cold or warmed up/toasted and while they are still a "treat" they are a better alternative to the hydrogenated-oil toaster pastries. Under the sale/subscribe-and-save price they are a better price via Amazon than at our Walmart.

3A little dry, but very good  Jul 30, 2011 By Chase
If you've had a Pop Tart, you know what these will generally taste like. These are more crumbly and leave your mouth more dry, and have less frosting on the top. Despite the packaging, there is no pomegranate in the ingredients; the main fruit in these is apple. However, they do not taste like apple pop tarts because they are made with different spices (no cinnamon for instance). Despite this, I am taking off two stars because of false advertising. Otherwise the ingredient list is very good. These have more calories than pop tarts (400 for two) because from what I can tell the pastry batter is made from richer ingredients. They keep me filled longer than Pop Tarts. If they had pomegranate and more cherry inside I'd be satisfied.

1Palm Oil? Wiping out the Orangutans  Feb 16, 2012 By Sheila McDaniels
Species rich rain forests are burned down to grow palm oil plantations. Orangutan infants are purposefully made orphans, and the loss of habitat is wiping out the species (and many others). It is cheaper than paying for soy bean or other locally grown North American plant oils. This includes shipping from Indonesia and Borneo. This low price has increased the demand of palm oil. Of course, soy bean farms are only half as bad. But the density of species is considered much lower in the plains, and the lands have been cultivated for over a century. Borneo is mostly virgin forest. But, how else will the citizens of the islands make a living?

Vegetarian? Organic? Humanitarian? Doesn't the circumstances of the ingredients negate those factors? This is a rant that I hate thinking about. But, I want a better world.

The issue is complex. There's got to be another, better way. Boycotting palm oil (found in many prepared foods, like toaster pastries, crackers and cookies) and palmitate (found in some moisturizers and beauty products) are a start. Hopefully it will decrease demand and make it unprofitable to create new plantations. Maybe we can save a species from extinction. Mistakes will be made, but we should be better caretakers of this blue dot. Let's reward the manufacturers that think on the longer, larger scale.
