| | Description | Motor oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean, and cool engines. Types of motor oil include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic), and recycled oils. Motor oil varies in weight and viscosity, as well as additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) grades motor oils according to viscosity--the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer motor oils are graded by two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather (Winter or "W") performance. SAE 5W-30 This oil has a weight of SAE 5W-30, meaning it has an SAE viscosity rating of 5 in cold temperatures and a rating of 30 at normal operating temperature. Always check your vehicle's owner's manual to verify that this is the correct weight of motor oil for your vehicle. Conventional Motor Oil This oil is a conventional motor oil, meaning it is refined from crude oil or petroleum products. Conventional motor oils may or may not have additives included after refining. Conventional motor oils are more versatile than synthetic or hybrid motor oils, because they are suitable for use with nearly all types of modern vehicle engines, from cars and trucks to motorcycles, ATVs, farm equipment, and more.

With Mobil 1 EP there is no need to change your oil every 3000 miles Sep 15, 2008

This is the best oil out there for the regular driver who wants maximum protection for the car's engine. A little research brought me to the Mobil 1 Extended Performance line of Synthetic oils when searching for a product that could allow me more time between oil changes. Mobil 1 EP allows a 15,000 mile/1 year guaranteed life of the product. I have been using this in combination with their Mobil 1 filters for years. The cost is higher, but I only need to change the oil once a year!
Originally developed for aerospace, synthetic oils became commercially available in the 1960's. Some technical advantages Synthetic Oil has over Conventional Oil are [from Wikipedia]:
- Measurably better low and high temperature viscosity performance
- Better chemical & shear stability
- Decreased evaporative loss
- Resistance to oxidation, thermal breakdown and oil sludge problems
- Extended drain intervals with the environmental benefit of less oil waste.
- Improved fuel economy in certain engine configurations.
- Better lubrication on cold starts
By using a Synthetic oil not only will your engine be able to perform better, but it can also extend the engine life. I HIGHLY recommend use for those with more severe or high demand driving conditions.

From having worked in the petroleum industry test industry, I learned from our customers that Mobil 1 has been the pioneer and the performance benchmark for synthetic lubricants.
From personal experience, I have used this product in my vehicles, both classic and contemporary, for more than fifteen years or easily 2 million miles without an engine failure.

Fine oil, but better prices are out there. Oct 03, 2008

Amazon is my source for buying so many things, and I am a satisfied user, but we do still need to check locally. Mobil 1 oil is on a promotional sale at Advance Auto -5qts plus free Mobil 1 filter($10)for $30. Of course, it's an excellent oil with the EP version permitting 15,000 miles or 1 yr(I wouldn't really go that far myself)between changes. It can be economical to use since less oil changes can more than make up for the additional cost of this synthetic oil.

I have been using Mobile 1 Extended Performance 5w-30 in both my BMW and my Toyota for the last several years. Mobile 1 is recommended and original equipment in my BMW and has been great in the Toyota. I only drive each vehicle about 7-8k miles per year, but have had no problems going 12 months before changing. I also like the fact that less frequent oil changes are better for the environment. The extra cost of full synthetic oil is well worth it.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance is one of the best oils on the market for street cars (race cars and motorcycles have different requirements and there are oils specifically made for them). It is a group III synthetic these days in this Country. No longer a group IV oil made from P.A.O. base stocks. But still highly refined (though processes such as hydrocracking) and one of the best things you can do to maintain your cars motor in good condition and prevent wear. Though I would not take for granted that you can automatically go 15,000 miles between oil changes. If you look at the fine print you will notice it says to observe your manufacturers warranty which will specify oil change intervals (you don't want some damage to be blamed on your not changing the oil at the proper intervals, whether that was the cause or not) and in general says to follow your manufacturers recommendations. There are also typically other qualifiers such as a mileage figure OR once a year. One will notice that there are almost always both a regular and "severe duty" change interval as well. Many people will fall in to the severe duty schedule so check that to determine the proper change intervals for your vehicle. If one is going to go beyond a manufacturers recommendations after the warranty period hopefully they will have done some research to support such a decision. I would just point out that at the prices this oil is available at it most certainly is cheap protection for preventing wear on your cars engine. Though the prices I see here are not the least expensive by a long shot. It is regularly priced at $26.00 for a 5 quart jug at the big retail store that begins with "Wal". Some auto parts stores like "Azone" will price match so you can get that same price there. There are also regular sales or rebates on this and other oils which make it unreasonable to purchase it at higher prices since one can plan ahead for something like an oil change. Use the viscosity for your cars requirements and your climate which will also be defined in your owners manual. So getting this high quality oil does not have to be a huge expense, certainly do not go longer between intervals because of cost being a factor, simply purchase it at the low price and change it according to schedule, you can't go wrong there and may be providing yourself an extra cushion which is not necessarily bad either. Of course always recycle your used motor oil and filters, it is free to do at most auto parts stores. Otherwise I have been using M1 for decades with zero issues of engine wear and I attribute that to careful maintenance with Mobil 1 and a high quality filter such as the Mobil I EP filters that use synthetic media. High quality synthetic oil that can be purchased at very low prices quite easily in conjunction with a synthetic media filter is going to be a great way to treat your cars engine and a great value as well, this oil accomplishes just that.
