Great weaving yarn!! Jun 29, 2010
By J. Bagrowski Lion has really overlooked a segment of the fiberarts community by not marketing their 1878 as a weaving yarn. It is about the same weight and sett (12-15epi) as Harrisville Shetland, but at half the price! On the negative side, it does not full quite as dramatically as the Harrisville and comes in a limited range of colors. But on the positive side, it comes in huge cones (2000+ yards!) and feels much softer once woven and fulled than the Harrisville. (Good choice for lacy scarves) It also takes dye well and is less likely to felt in the dyepot. Did I mention the price?

Great yarn at a great price May 31, 2010

This is a very nice, smooth fingering weight wool, very suitable for lacework and baby clothes. Because it is on a cone, with few or no knots, you can (probably) knit an entire scarf, shawl or baby blanket without a single join, which is very covnenient. It only comes in a few colors, but they are well chosen. The yarn can also be combined with (say) laceweight mohair to make a thicker yarn.

Great yarn for machine knitting Dec 06, 2009
By Gr8WhiteNortherner
"GWN"
This soft 100% wool yarn on a cone is ideal for machine knitting on a standard machine (and possibly fine gauge too). It is perfect for lightweight sweaters and vests and is also ideal for (fairly) fine lace. It is soft enough to be worn next to the skin by many (though not all). It is available in a pleasant but limited range of colours.
Wool is a strong, resilient fibre, but this yarn contains no nylon, so its wear-resistance is somewhat limited for items like socks and work gloves and mittens. While it is suitable for socks and mittens for gentle use, hard use would likely be inadvisable.

Great yarn; beware colors Jan 25, 2011

I do enjoy working with this yarn. Unlike some other reviewers, I did not find that it was cut into small segments. I am almost 1/2 way through my spool and have yet to find a single break. It looks like it will wear like iron and the few times I've made mistakes in my pattern and had to take it out and start over, there was very little fraying and the work did not suffer from re-using the segment. My complaint is that the photo of the "natural heather" color makes it look like a nice soft tan. In reality, it is a camel color, almost a brown, and the spool looks like almost the exact color of twine. It still works for my purposes and looks pretty but is more bland than I thought. It is also very hard to match this yarn to other types, so if you are looking to do an accent color, you pretty much have to order two spools. I just ordered several other colors because I do like the yarn so much. I just hope that the colors are more true to their pictures than the natural heather otherwise I am going to have many months of bland crocheting to look forward to.
