Quick build, fun to play, challenging for those little brains Apr 15, 2010
By LegoGirl One of the new Lego "board games," Pirate Code is similar to the game Mastermind (where you try to crack your opponent's secret color code of pegs). First you build the game itself from the provided Lego components, then 2-4 people can play the code game.
As far as Lego pieces included, you get a variety of common items along with many colored jewels and a skeleton. The setup ends up looking like four pirate planks leading to treasure chests. There is as well a very cool rubber Lego die---it's customizable with different tiles that click into the the rubber cube itself.
Once the game is assembled, players set up their own secret code by placing 4 of the colored jewels inside their treasure chest. Players then take turns rolling the die, selecting colored jewels to 'guess' the codes of the other players. Similar to Mastermind, jewel placement is confirmed as correct/right place, correct/wrong place, or not correct at all. Play continues until all the codes have been cracked; last person standing is the Winner.
Aside from the common rules of play, Lego also includes directions on several 'alternative' ways to play the game. They even discuss options where you can make up your own rules, customizing the die to suit the game you design----great creative fun for kids!
I received this game along with two other new Lego games for my birthday; so far the kids like this one the best! Bonus points to Lego for coming up with some fun games that can simply then be absorbed into a larger Lego collection once the kids outgrow the game itself.

Jewels, Pirates, Treasure-- LEGO FUN! Sep 21, 2010

I'm not going to repeat the info about how this game is like 'Mastermind'. (It really is!) Read the other reviews and you'll get the gist of it. Since most kids these days have never even HEARD of 'Mastermind', they won't get the similarity, but they'll enjoy the concept. I'll keep it short and say that your kids will enjoy this game, it is fun to play for little kids (6+) to adults, and equally fun to assemble. In addition, you get a whole treasure chest full of LEGO jewels and a skeleton LEGO guy! Who could ask for more? This is a good game for you to use to teach HOW to play a real game. Lots of kids only know how to play video games and don't have any board game skills. They don't know how to take turns, roll a die, or lose gracefully. They also don't know how to plan ahead and reason by deduction, which is not good for long-term critical thinking skills. LEGO Pirate's Cove is an inexpensive, fun, and entertaining game. Recommended.

Kind of like Lego 'Mastermind' Jul 05, 2010

For anyone who remembers the game 'Mastermind' this is very similar -- each person comes up with a unique 'code' (i.e. sequence of 4 colored studs) which you conceal in your pirate treasure chest. Then everyone takes turns trying to guess each other's codes.
My 9 year old likes it and really had fun getting to 'build' the game out of legos. He loves that you hide your code in a treasure chest.
It is a cute twist on mastermind. The lego pieces are of course very durable. The design is a little faulty -- it is a hard to keep your 'code' hidden with the treasure chests joined to the board -- we found it easier to detach the chest, that way you could bring them up close to you and do a better job of keeping your 'code' hidden.
Overall, I would definitely get it for any child who loves legos and games. Its not really challenging enough for adults.

Great Family Fun Sep 12, 2010
By mammaoftwo Just finished playing this game with my husband, 7 year old and 5 year old. We ALL loved it. First, we all had to share in the task of building the board, then we had a great time creating codes and then trying to crack each others codes. The concept of the game was even in reach for the 5 year old even though it is rated for 7 and up. I am looking forward to trying out the other lego games that are out there, this one offered great family fun.

Need more games like it Mar 15, 2011
By asburnham143 I bought this game for my five year old son. Having taken formal logic classes in college I saw this game and HAD to get it. Logic is an art that is, in my opinion, neglected nowadays. While this game is reliant on a good bit of luck, the player who has stronger deductive reasoning skills tends to be the winner. My five year old has a little trouble reasoning out some of the moves but clearly understands how to play the game. Every time we play his logic skills seem to get stronger and he is beginning to understand how to manipulate the colors to crack the codes. Definitely a great game for families.
