| | Features | Automatic watering system for indoor potted plantsWater soluble fertilizer delivery system; automatic plant fertilizer and feederEasy to use vacation watering for outdoor and indoor plantsKeep your plants healthy with our just-in-time watering principle based on capillary action
| |
| | Description | HydroSpike is a simple, effective method for keeping your plants watered, without your constant attention. The product works by automatic capillary action, drawing water from a nearby container when the surrounding soil dries, compared to the ceramic spike. The Spike replenishes the moisture at the same rate your plant draws it from the soil, thereby maintaining an optimal moisture level. No more over-watering or under-watering. Easy setup, perfect for vacation plant watering. Save time with our self watering system when you are too busy to tend to your plants.
Recommend 1 spike for a 6-inch pot. 3 spikes or more for a 12-inch pot. | |

Pleasantly Surprised Jan 27, 2010

I half expected these things not to work and out plants would be dead after returning from a holiday vacation. Surprisingly, as simple as these are they worked great. Plants kept with constant moisture. Now we leave them in all the time and just refill the vases. Someone should make a tank that can clip on the outside of the pot. Only note is that you need to fill the ceramic plug completely full with water and immerse the tubes to ensure the capillary action works to pull water into the spike.

Easy way to keep your plants alive Nov 23, 2009
By Jim C. I'll start by saying, I'm not much of a greenthumb. One of my friends gave me a little bonsai tree as a housewarming gift a year or so ago, and it has since turned a nice crisp yellow because I put the plant in a room I don't often frequent, and kept forgetting to water it. Since then, I've started using these hydrospikes to keep my plants watered without constantly having to remember when I last watered them. Works really well! I keep a cup of water hidden behind the pot, and I fill the cup maybe once every couple weeks. It definitely makes it easier to keep your plants nice and green.
Every once in a while, I've managed to leave the plant unattended for too long and it sucks the entire cup dry -- at which point, it's easy to get it going again, just refill the spike with water up to the brim to get the water flowing again.
All in all, I think it's a good product, works well, and seems to be cheaper than some of the equivalents. Will be buying some more if I get some more plants!

Good system Aug 11, 2010
By Justus Koshiol Bought a set of these for my wife's office plants. So far they work exactly as advertised and the plants are healthy and happy. I used one in a six inch pot and two in a 12 inch and that seems adequate.
For folks that are having trouble with over watering, make sure that the water jar is BELOW the bottom tip of the watering stake. (which is mentioned in the instructions but the illustration is vague) If it is level or above the water stake will draw too much water.

Could be my fault, then again...(UPDATE)...it was Jul 07, 2010

The concept seems simple enough, and scientific enough. I'm just not sure it was supposed to work like this. I hooked up 6 tomato plants in large pots and 5 flowering plants in medium size pots on my outdoor balcony. Temps were in the low 90's, and I used three 2 1/2 gallon reservoirs. All of the reservoirs were drained dry in three days; however, the indoor/outdoor carpet underneath the flowering plants was soaked. Obviously, I don't recommended them for vacation watering.
UPDATE: After reading the numerous positive reviews, I decided to follow one of the suggested tips and try it again. Lo and behold, these things work as long as you are careful not to elevate your water containers above your plants, which is exactly what I did the first go around.

Hard to control May 26, 2010
By David A. Nesje I have the spikes in a different size pots. So far in the large pot it is okay but the small pots let too much water in. I have to monitor & remove them when it gets too wet. Not sure this will work for vacation. Would not buy again
