Description

Better Than Steroids! is a summary of what you need to know to be a successful bodybuilder, athlete or just to look freaking good. It covers in a stepwise fashion, the information you need to succeed. I will review why and how anabolic steroids work, which will lead us into why food programs, eating plans and tricks like the pre and post workout meal are not only comparable to anabolic steroids, but better! I will review the importance of tracking your body composition, as those who are meticulous enough to do so are the ones who keep improving. I will give you a quick synopsis of water, and will review information directly from What Does Your Doctor Look like Naked? Your Guide to Optimal Health such as Food Timing and The Free Window.

The meat of the book is the eating plans. I have reviewed the top four eating plans for guaranteed success. They come with detailed instructions on how they work, when they work best, and how to design one for yourself. From leaning up to bulking up, these are the eating plans that work. They teach you how to use the most powerful drug out there, food, to your advantage. I say it all the time, "Anyone can exercise, but only the ones who know HOW to eat make improvements!"

This is followed by the pre and post workout meals, the most important meals in a bodybuilder's day. With this information on utilization of these powerful meals, mass gain is optimized, fat is burned, soreness is reduced and recovery is enhanced! I then cover glycogen supercomensation, a dominant technique in the quest for maximal muscle gain. BTS started out with a full chapter on supplements, but near the end I felt it was more important and beneficial to get the eating plans understood, as this is the true power in a bodybuilder's bag of tricks. I have included a few supplements' in an appendix, and will plan to use the rest in future books.

There is a detailed review of the most successful cardio routine out there, the High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program. There is a section on weight lifting practices, as monotony in the gym will be the death of your goal attainment. Finally, BTS provides some algorithms for putting all the information together for your optimal achievement.

5Excellent Book  Jan 22, 2009 By Sammamish Reader
Anyone (bodybuilder or not) who is interested in how do build lean mass and lose fat should have this book in their library. I am so tired of negative "reviews" that state the book has "nothing new" or its information can be found for "free on the Internet". Obviously the same can be said for almost any book-- almost anything can be found on the Internet (even copyrighted material!). However, that requires finding the material, filtering out all of the conflicting information and judging whether to trust the source of the information found on the Internet. The whole point of buying a book, any book, is that the material is edited, presented in a clear, logical fashion, is supported by citations or research, and is written by an authority. This book gets 5 stars in all those respects!

5Straightforward Review of BTS  Feb 10, 2011 By C. Daniel
The author's point seems to be that following the nutritional advice he gives without taking steroids is better than taking steroids while hardly paying attention to what you eat at all. My opinion on that is that he's possibly right.

Basically, what I think the reader should take from this book is that you can use calories FOR you--you have to eat all 3 macronutrients anyway to build muscle, so you might as well make the most of them. He discusses nutrient timing and what Arnold Schwarzenegger calls "creating demand". After you do a really hard workout, your muscles are in demand of protein, and they're also in need of carbohydrates to replace the carb stores in the muscles (glycogen).

It makes sense that if you eat quality protein shortly after a hard workout, and also an adequate amount of carbohydrates, a great deal of these calories are going to go to muscle anabolism and recovery, and NOT SO MUCH TO BE STORED AS BODY FAT. He doesn't advocate eating an excess of calories, though, as there are only so many your body can use for "productive" purposes.

Like any book, he makes a lot of points that I highly disagree with, but for me, ovrerall, this book was worth reading because of the helpful points he makes, and also because of the topics he discusses that further support and explain what modern experts and reliable/credible readings say about building muscle.

Lastly, I want to mention that specifically, what he says about insulin was very beneficial to me - it can be your best friend (assisting muscle-building) or your worst enemy (assisting the body's natural tendency to want to store calories as fat).

I highly recommend reading this book and determining what parts of it might be helpful to you.

5Whether you are a successful bodybuilder or amateur this book will benefit you!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Jun 02, 2007 By N. Hale
"Better Than Steroids" really unlocks the secrets to using FOOD as a drug. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to change their body, no matter what their goals may be. I have been using Dr. Willey's concepts with my personal training clients as well as myself for a few years. I have helped guide over 100+ people using the ideas and concepts in "Better Than Steroids" and have had nothing but success.

I am an accomplished amateur bodybuilder for 5 years now and Dr. Willey has guided my training and has taken eating to a whole new level. Drug free bodybuilding demands proper eating, whether you are bulking up or leaning down, and Dr. Willey has unmasked these secretes for the first time in any book.

Overall this is an easy read and touches on many subjects from water intake, different lifting programs as well as a vast variety of eating secrets that with a little dedication can change the body, mind and overall life of ANYONE.

I give it an A+.

4Covers the most important part of building a great body - Nutrition.  Jan 11, 2011 By Anthony Myers
I love this book because it covers the key to a great body, nutrition.
It concentrates more on nutrition than it does on weight training and cardio. I love that.

The only reason I gave this book a 4/5 is because the actual plans were a bit confusing.
Dr.Warren Willey gives you an exact blueprint to attacking your goal, whatever it may be.

Want to lose fat and maintain muscle? He's got a plan for that.
Want to build muscle and maintain fat? He's got a plan for that
Want to build muscle and even lose a bit of fat in the process? It's in there too.

It just takes a bit of work to construct your plan and figure out exactly what you
need to do, day to day. I think it could have been layed out and worded better.
But that doesn't take away from the great information that is in this book. It's wonderful
and I recommend anyone who wants to learn how to eat picks up a copy.

Remember... Eating is the most important piece to the fitness puzzle. Learn how to eat to achieve
the results you want.
