4Long Enough!  Jun 13, 2011 By Kwix
I purchased this filter wrench as a last ditch effort to free a stuck whole house water filter housing (10"x4") after breaking the plastic wrench that came with it. After searching for a while for a plastic wrench that would fit I gave up and concentrated on a strap wrench that was a)long enough and b)wouldn't cost more than a new filter housing. This strap wrench fit the bill.

Pros:
The strap is a beefy 1.5" or so wide and has some sort of reinforcement so it doesn't stretch when used. The strap is long enough to fully encircle the 8" diameter housing. If I hadn't bent the aluminum housing bracket, I have no doubt that with enough leverage this wrench would have removed the housing.

Cons:
I have two complaints. The first is that you must hold onto the free end of the strap with your palm against the handle. While there are some ridges that do a sufficient job as a bearing surface for the strap, having to hold it means that you can't really get good leverage with both hands or another object (say a pipe). The second is that the design of the where it intersects the object being turned is a bit weird. It ends up allowing the wrench to flex a bit and you end up loosing some torque that should be going to the object. Finally, while not really a complaint I do have an observation. Since you have to hold the handle to hold the strap, you must be able to get at least one arm into the area you are working on. The handle is about 8" long so that may also limit your working space.

Verdict:
If you have a series of simple jobs that require the strength and length this strap offers or, like me you are out of options on an odd job, give it a shot. If you can get it into the space to work and hold it tight enough it might just be what you are looking for.
