5Beautiful in Form and Function!  Aug 14, 2010 By TheraP "TheraP"
I love this arm! I've had it just a few days. But I can't imagine living without it now! This thing is STURDY! To my mind the design is beautiful. And it does exactly exactly what you need, which is to have a monitor which can be raised or lowered, brought closer or pushed into the background, and turned every which way (including sideways!). I bought it to go with my new Mac Mini, Apple Mac Mini MC270LL/A Desktop, and a lovely monitor, ViewSonic's VX2250WM-LED 22-Inch (21.5-Inch Vis) Widescreen Full HD 1080p LED Monitor with Integrated Stereo Speakers, which would have been very stationary, not flexible.

It is so easy to assemble this arm, which comes beautifully packaged in a small box (in three large pieces, with everything you need to assemble it in several different ways - including tools, with the exception of a Phillips screwdriver). I'm a 65 year old female and had no trouble following the pictures to assemble it. I will admit though, that its weight is so heavy once it's assembled, that I did get some help holding it, while I attached it to my table. (That's not a negative, but you might want another person around when you're attaching it to the table.) By the way, it provides a variety of ways to attach as well. All pictured in the directions that come with it. This is one flexible and brilliant piece of equipment!

If you're looking for something which may last longer than you will, which is easy to assemble, very sturdy, and enables you to have almost infinite control over how you place your monitor, this is what you've been looking for! It's a small price to pay when you consider how long it will last. It was delivered quickly by Amazon.

If you can't afford it now, put it on your wish list for later!

53M: A Worthy Ergotron Competitor  Jul 13, 2011 By Charles Ufarley
I own both an Ergotron LX and Neo-flex, so let me start by saying the 3M Desk Mount Arm (MA200MB) has some slight disadvantages by comparison, if you could call them that. The 3M cannot angle your TV/monitor down very much. It has the same downard tilt as the LX, but the advantage with the 3M is its max height, so I would think that you should be able to tilt it down even more for the best viewing angle. Maybe my situation is unique, so I'm keeping my rating at 5 stars. The 3M's base pole is at least 14" high (12" useable), and fully assembled, the possible height adjustment is better than the Ergotron LX Desk Mount LCD Arm 45-241-026, which has a shorter base pole as of July 2011. In addition, the 3M will rotate your monitor 90 degrees clockwise (for portrait viewing), while both the Ergotron LX and Neo-flex allow you to rotate in any direction. Maybe this is worse seeing how I'm constantly adjusting the rotation on my Ergotrons after moving the arms.

The 3M has a beautiful black powdercoat finish and is all metal where it matters. The final arm which holds your display has a plastic casing. 3M also included a 75mm to 100mm VESA adaptor plate along with all of the required screws. What Ergotron did for the LX however, was just use a larger plate with both 75mm and 100mm holes drilled in it. So if you need to use the 100mm holes, you're going to have the extra weight of the adapter plate on the 3M. You can adjust for this in the same exact spot as you do on the Ergotron, so not a problem.

3M threw in a beefy wrench for disassembly of the base plate should you decide to drill the arm directly into your desk, not to mention all the tools you need to adjust/assemble. All cable management is underneath the arms, and the arm comes boxed in 3 pieces with the base plate assembled, which was a nice plus.

I needed the added height of the 3M, otherwise I would have just bought another LX. I'm not entirely pleased about the minimal downward tilt, but the LX is the same way. I'm always happy to try out new products though, and I'm pleased to see 3M giving Ergotron a run for their money. I didn't intend to make this review into a side-by-side comparison, but I wanted to let any potential buyers know that even a direct comparison to Ergotron, which is really the AV standard, can't stop me from recommending this 3M arm 100%.

5Absolutely No Unsightly Cords Or Annoying Vibrations!  Mar 09, 2011 By Tante Maren "Maren"
This is my 4th desk mounted monitor arm. Until I tried this arm, the best one I had was an Ergotron. Ergotron makes a superb arm with only two problems- the cords shift and look messy whenever you move the arm and the worst problem is the arm vibrates on any little movement. If I moved in my chair, the joints on the arm would vibrate. If I move my mouse too much or the keyboard, the arm vibrates. When I use my printer, it feels like a minor earthquake shaking the desk.

Now for the first time ever, 3M has made a sleek, heavy duty monitor arm that not only keeps the cords tucked away perfectly when moving the arm, but due to this superior design, no matter what movement I make, there are no vibrations ever! I've owned two higher priced Ergotrons and another less known name arm, and as good as they are, they don't even compare to the sturdiness, design and high quality of this 3M model.

I love the capability of having more room on my desktop by having the monitor above the desk with full adjustability, so the adjustable monitor arm is a must have on my desk. This 3M monitor arm comes in 3 heavy duty mostly metal pieces, with an adjustable plate for the back of your monitor and all the parts and tools you will need except for one- you will need a phillips screwdriver. You have the option of clamping it to the edge of your desk or drilling a hole for grommet mounting it. I clamped it on and it only took 5 minutes of my time. I then adjusted the tension screws in the arm with my screwdriver, as well as adjusting the arm with the allen wrench and allen key to support the weight of my monitor and that was it.

The arm supports monitors up to 20 lbs., and you can move it up or down, towards or away from you, and it swivels sideways 180 degrees in either direction. It's height has a 13 inch range which gives you the ability to view your monitor sitting or standing. We have also found this arm is outstanding in supporting a portable tv on any table in our home, giving the wonderful 180 degree adjustment and up and down and forward and backward movements for viewing at any angle!

It is so wonderful to never see cords coming out every time you move this monitor arm and especially to be able to never have those irritating vibrations whenever I use my keyboard, my mouse, move in my chair, bump the table and especially when using my printer! 3M has made a better adjustable monitor arm and it blows both my expensive Ergotrons away and for this reason alone, this arm gets 5 full stars! There is a 5 year warranty on this arm as well, but when you see the heavy duty structure of this arm without any loose or jiggly joints, you can see it will last decades, not just 5 years!

5Robodesk, reporting for duty.  Feb 23, 2011 By Mad Kulle T. Edwards
Using this with an older 19" LCD monitor. A little on the heavy side compared to current 19" LCDs and pretty thick.

Right out of the box this thing is much more sturdy than I expected, quite frankly it's built like a tank. There are three solid pieces to the arm, each one rigid and seemingly well made. These pieces simply insert in to each other in a pretty obvious way using the weight of the device itself to keep these components together. It's easy peasy and very effective, again once assembled it feels solid with smooth movements.

There are a few different methods you can use to attach it, a screw clamp being the 'default' and the method I went with. Using it this way it was just _barely_ able to clamp to my desk (an IKEA Expidit, pretty popular model, 2-3" thick, worth mentioning I suppose) at a fully open gate. This was fine though since that made it all the more snug. One thing in particular about the clamp on this one vs. other similar devices though is that there is sensible horizontal weight distribution. Once you get it on there it feels very well anchored unlike other similar stands, lamps, and things of that nature which have a tendency to flop around and chew up whatever you attach them to. The other choices I believe were a screw system which you can run through your desk and then I believe some kind of rivet method, I can't say I looked them over too closely since I hadn't intended to use them.

The kit comes with enough hardware to attach to most standard monitors. This includes a default 75mm bracket and a converter for a 100mm monitor mount. I did run in to a small snag here where the screws included with the kit didn't catch any of the meat on the back of my monitor due to a recessed design in the plastic of my monitor. This particular hiccup in the installation I'm willing to chalk that up to the particular monitor I used with this arm since it's a little older and quite off-brand. I was able to poach the screws from the stand that came with the monitor so all was well in the world but before you buy this you might want to check to see what kind of distance you have to bridge from the back facing of your monitor and where the screws actually begin to thread in. The included screws I'd say are about an inch tops.

Once I had it all installed the movements felt wonderful. I'm not sure what the exact weight of my monitor is but the arm handles it like a champ, a bigger monitor would definitely work. You have side to side adjustments at the neck as well as front to back angling. The bulk of the arm has a full 360 swivel and a range of motion between completely vertical up and about 15 degrees or so down. You could use this pretty easily to position a monitor above or below an existing one rather easily but more importantly you can have it at a standard viewing angle without having the monitor actually moving forward or back much more than you'd see in a basic included stand.

You probably won't need the instructions but they're there and about as comprehensive as you'd need. It's a catch all booklet for a few different models so you might have to sift through it a little but the exploded views are pretty clear. A little more text would have served it well but it gets the job done.

All things considered this thing is top notch and a definitively better option than my monitor's default stand which simply had too much of a footprint for my desk. A great well made space saver, recommend.

4Adjusting the tension is key  Feb 28, 2011 By Akash
As others have mentioned this monitor arm is absurdly easy to set up. It's so easy to set up that I was a little bit worried about its structural integrity when I was looking at the manual, however I've had no issues with this so far and my non-scientific stress-tests (mostly just yanking on the support arms as hard as I can) have all yielded positive results.

However, when I first set it up, I was a little concerned to find that the arm wasn't completely supporting the weight of the monitor. That is, I would raise the arm to it's loftiest heights and it would slowly descend to about it's mid-height. At first I decided this might just be a result of the size of my monitor (a 24 inch acer, P244W) might be the culprit and since I'd never want the monitor that high anyway, I let it be) However my OCD kicked in and I eventually took a screw driver to the tension screws and it works perfectly now.

My single complaint is that the manual is almost indecipherable. While the installation is so simple that you should be able to accomplish it without the manual, should you attempt to use it you'll be lost. The models are all drawn at strange angles and it's tough to tell whether a step is required or optional. 3M could really stand to do some work on that front.
